Ordinary float glass cut to size is simple straight forward task and can be done in minutes. Float glass comes in a range of thickness’ and is not considered a safety glass. Most residential windows in Sydney are made up in float glass. Often the removal of shattered pieces is difficult and dangerous.

Laminated safety glass cut to size requires an additional process but is also a simple task to perform. Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by a PVC interlayer, between its two layers of glass. The interlayer keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic “spider web” cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass. Laminated glass is normally used when there is a possibility of human impact or where the glass could fall if shattered

Toughened safety glass requires a more time-consuming process than the above. Toughened glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering the glass creates balanced internal stresses which cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards.

The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury. As a result of its safety and strength, toughened glass is used in a variety of demanding applications, including shop fronts, architectural glass doors and glass pool Mirror can also be cut to size with your choice of edge work. Ordering mirror cut to size and fitting it yourself will save you money in labour costs if your budgets tight.
